    Cat Insurance

Every year in the UK , the owners of cats spend hundreds of thousands of pounds on toys, baskets and luxury treats for their pets. Millions are spent on ‘special' branded cat foods and large sums are spent at ‘cat beauticians'. All this goes to prove that people love their cats and will go to any expense to show them that they are cared for.

Why then in our nation of cat lovers do so few owners take out a policy of insurance that will make absolutely sure their pet will receive adequate medical attention if they are unfortunate enough to fell ill or receive an injury that requires treatment from a veterinary surgeon? Statistics show that in the United Kingdom , only about 15 per cent of cat owners have taken out pet insurance. Of course, a pet policy may be considered to be an unnecessary expense by some people and of course your cat may never ever require medical treatment during its lifetime. Any insurance cover only ever becomes useful when you need it, so consider the facts:

Statistics reveal that every year about a third of all cats and kittens have to be taken to the vet for unplanned medical attention. The causes are countless and range from accidental injury to an illness that requires major surgery followed by long periods of recuperation. Cats are particularly prone to accidental injury. After all, they are generally independent and inquisitive and like to wander. This makes them vulnerable. So how would you cope with a bill of a thousand pounds or more if your cat breaks a leg or is hit by a car when crossing the road? The cost of even relatively short routine treatments can run to two or three hundred pounds and many times that for major abdominal surgery. So insuring your cat makes sense.

Policies can be obtained from a variety of sources; on line, over the ‘phone and even from your local supermarket. Premiums can be as little as a few pounds a week and of course different insurance companies offer different levels of cover, so it is important to read the small print. Generally, some routine treatments and existing conditions will not be covered. Some companies will impose exclusion clauses and there will be a capped limit on costs covered. Premiums will increase with the age of the pet and the cost of the policy will depend on the particular breed insured. Some policies cover the legal costs in the event of defending a claim against you for damages resulting from the actions of your pet, the costs incurred when advertising for a lost cat and even the cost of replacing a rare and expensive breed.

Do seriously consider taking out a policy of insurance to pay for medical treatment for your cat. Of course they are not compulsory, but there is no NHS for pets and with some vets' charges rising by around 10 per cent each year, solid insurance may save you from having to make a heartbreaking decision one day.
