Pet Travel Scheme (PETS)
This is the recognised official means of taking your pet abroad with you when you go on holiday. The animal must have received all the necessary inoculations in order to prevent the spread of rabies and other prescribed diseases into the country and have the accompanying certificates. It then must be fitted with a microchip that will be read both on departure and return. This allows you to bring your pet back into the UK without the need for it to serve a period of quarantine. This applies to countries within the European Union and certain other non EU countries specified by DEFRA. The scheme applies to a variety of animals including dogs and cats. Full details of this scheme can be obtained from the DEFRA website.
