The credit crunch could be to blame for the fall in successful re homing of stray cats and dogs currently being housed in Battersea Dogs and Cats Home. That is the most likely explanation for the fall in numbers of pet owners coming to claim their lost animals according to a spokesman at the home. The dog’s and cat’s home in London has been taking dogs found stranded in London since the mid nineteenth century.

The number of people reporting their dogs missing has dropped by almost 25 per cent from 4,250 in 2008 to 3,339 in 2009 over the same period. The overall number of stray dogs coming in to the centre has lowered and this is thought to be due to a change in the way local authorities in London have been dealing with stay animals.

“The recent number of dogs claimed suggests that some people are not taking responsibility for their pets. If, for whatever reason, an owner is no longer able to care for their dog please don’t just abandon it onto the streets”, said the spokesman from Battersea, “that’s not the answer”. The credit Crunch has put an enormous strain on many families and this has led to unwillingness to pay for the upkeep of a family pet, vets bills and food are posing a strain to some people who are already unable to cope with their dwindling finances. The Battersea home has however come under strain with the additional inmates and would ask owners to consider looking at their website for tips on how to look after their pets on a budget.
