The RSPCA hold an Animal Welfare Sunday each year. The idea is that on a designated Sunday churches hold a service that highlights animal welfare through prayers and a service that will increase awareness towards relevant animal welfare issues.
This year the Animal Welfare Sunday will be on 4th October and the RSPCA has this year asked clergy to use this opportunity to highlight the effects of climate change on animals.
The recent spread of heartworm in dogs in the south east of England has been attributed to the spread of the parasites on mosquitoes which thrive in warmer conditions now experienced in many areas. The disease can be fatal to dogs who are unvaccinated.
The RSPCA’s head of external affairs, David Bowles, said “As reported at our recent conference, there is a predicted increase in the spread of infectious diseases to dogs from the continent. It is important to raise awareness of disease and let dog owners know that there is a vaccine available”.
